coinbase, shopify, ramp: why enterprises wrap claude code instead of using it raw

claude code is still the most-used coding agent in enterprises. but the companies shipping with it are building their own alternatives right next to it

coinbase built forge – an internal coding agent available through slack, linear and github. it took two engineers seven months. forge routes to any model via a gateway, not just anthropic. coinbase says forge usage is growing as fast if not faster than claude code.

shopify went even further. 75% of the company uses river, their slack-native agent. ~6,000 employees across 4,450 channels. river now coauthors 1 in 8 merged pull requests. shopify's own words: "we're all in on river. river is what we use to build shopify."

ramp built inspect – over 50% of their merged prs now come from it.

the pattern: tech companies aren't replacing claude code. they're wrapping it – building model-agnostic harnesses that let them swap providers, cut costs and avoid lock-in. claude code remains dominant, but it's becoming one option in a multi-model stack, not the default.

the real question for anthropic isn't whether claude code is the best coding agent. it's whether being the best matters when companies are architecting around using any model they want.
