Why Big Tech won't fund xAI: no cloud leverage to sell

pulse Man in coveralls welds a server rack labeled Colossus between rows of glowing green data center cabinets in a graffitied hall.

why is no big tech investing in xai?

google just put $10b into anthropic. amazon is in both openai ($50b) and anthropic ($5b+). microsoft has stakes in both too

but not one of them has written a check to musk.
it's not about the technology – it's about leverage

amazon, google and microsoft make their money on cloud infrastructure. when they invest in an ai lab, they're not just buying equity – they're buying a customer, and their investments come with cloud contracts worth tens of billions

musk doesn't need their clouds. he built colossus – one of the world's largest gpu clusters – and runs his own infrastructure through spacex. there's nothing to negotiate. no cloud deal to attach. no leverage to be had

so big tech stays out

2026 funding comparison table showing OpenAI at $122B added and $852B valuation, Anthropic at $45B and $380B, xAI at $20B and $200B with investors.
