what happened on april 15
the incident started at 14:53 utc, when anthropic reported increased errors on claude.ai, the api and claude code. at 15:03, the team said it had found the issue and was rolling out a fix.
at 15:20, anthropic said the api had fully recovered. the update dated the recovery "8:01 pt / 16:01 utc", but 8:01 pacific time is 15:01 utc. the api came back about 10 minutes after the fix started.
claude.ai took longer. at 15:57, anthropic wrote that claude.ai and the developer platform were down and claude code login through claude.ai did not work. users already logged in to claude code could keep working.
login success rates stabilized by 16:29. anthropic marked the incident resolved at 17:42 utc, 2 hours 49 minutes after it began. the status page rated it critical, its highest level.
what users saw
techradar tracked the outage live. downdetector reports peaked above 5,100. pro users couldn't log in because verification codes failed. free users were told they had hit their daily message limit before sending a prompt. others got a "service is temporarily busy" error.
it was the second claude.ai outage that week. on april 13, claude.ai was down for 55 minutes.
update, october 16, 2026: fewer incidents since the summer
the incident page still has no root cause, only the timeline. the number of incidents on the status page has dropped since july:
