openai and anthropic put $15m into ai for mathematicians

Mathematician steps onto a bridge of math symbols toward red and blue robot arms shaking hands over a chasm, for AI in math funding

the simons foundation, openai and anthropic are committing $15m in funding and resources to help mathematicians adapt to ai-driven research.

how the $15m will be used

openai is contributing $5m to the initiative. the simons foundation will distribute the funding, including through an open call for proposals, to support workshops and programs where researchers can evaluate ai-generated results, learn to use new tools and develop shared standards for ai in mathematics.

openai and anthropic will also provide researchers with access to their models and computing resources, including for work in other basic sciences.

why mathematicians need it

the initiative comes as ai models tackle increasingly difficult mathematical problems. researchers still need to verify proofs, understand their implications and determine whether they can lead to further discoveries.

as ai takes on more of this work, mathematicians may spend more time evaluating and refining machine-generated proofs. the foundation says the research community itself should shape how these tools are tested and used, rather than leaving those decisions to ai companies alone.
