Perplexity launched Teammates on November 5, 2026. They are AI agents that take on ongoing jobs instead of single requests. A teammate plans the work, watches for changes and messages people in Slack when it needs them. Perplexity's own blog post on the feature is dated November 4.
The feature builds on Perplexity Computer, the company's agent that runs tasks in a cloud desktop. For now Teammates are a research preview for individual Max subscribers on the web.
What Perplexity Teammates do
Perplexity describes teammates as "AI agents that own ongoing work" in its help center. The user gives one a responsibility, and it plans the tasks and follows through until the result is ready for review. Teammates "remember project goals, task history, and shared files across runs," the blog post says.
Each teammate gets its own desktop computer and browser. A large job is split into tasks that run in parallel across several agents, and the teammate adds agents as the work grows.
The main difference from a chatbot is that teammates do not wait for a prompt. They "monitor ongoing work and follow up as things change," Perplexity writes, and act without a fresh query. The help center gives an example of a standing instruction: summarize new messages in a Slack channel every weekday at 9 a.m. Eastern and send the summary to a chat.
That proactive mode is what the setup is built around.
How you set up a teammate
Setting one up takes three steps, according to Perplexity:
- connect plugins such as Slack, GitHub or Gmail;
- describe the work: where it comes from, what it should deliver and when the teammate should act;
- assign a project and a first task.
Perplexity's blog lists example roles. A marketing teammate manages social posts, email campaigns, ads and SEO, and watches competitor promotions. A support teammate reviews the previous day's complaints, sums up trends and flags cases that need a personal reply from the CEO. An operations teammate follows up on missing items when a deadline is 72 hours away.
New teammates run on Claude Opus 5.5 by default, the help center says. Most of these roles involve other people, which is where Slack comes in.
Teammates in Slack and with each other
A teammate can sit in a Slack channel. Colleagues can hand it work there or ask for updates. Teammates can also be tagged as apps in GitHub and Linear.
Teammates pass work to each other too. In Perplexity's example, one teammate finds bugs on a website and hands its findings to another that prepares fixes. Teammates in the same project share context, files and instructions, and they message each other when new information arrives.
Giving agents this much room raises the question of control.
What controls Perplexity puts on teammates
Perplexity's answer is review and isolation. A teammate sends progress updates and approval requests until it finishes the job. Users can review its work, take over its desktop or redirect it mid-task.
Each teammate runs in a separate environment, with browser sessions kept apart from other teammates. Saved passwords are encrypted, and the help center says teammates cannot view them. Access to Slack, GitHub and other tools follows the permissions of those plugins and of the project.
The help center also warns that the feature "is still under development" and its behavior may change. That caveat matters for anyone who wants to hand it real work today.
Who can use Teammates and what it costs
Teammates are available only to individual Max subscribers, on the web first and on iOS soon. Pro subscribers are not included, and Enterprise accounts need their admin to request access.
| Detail | Perplexity Teammates |
|---|---|
| Plan | Perplexity Max, individual accounts |
| Price | $167 a month billed annually |
| Credits | 10,000 a month, plus 35,000 bonus credits |
| Platforms | Web now, iOS soon |
| Default model | Claude Opus 5.5 |
| Status | Research preview |
Teammates draw on the same monthly credits as Computer. Complex projects use more credits, the help center warns, especially when agents run in parallel. Perplexity has not said how many teammates one account can run.
Are Perplexity Teammates ready to replace a coworker
Not yet, and Perplexity does not claim they are. The product is a research preview, it is limited to the most expensive plan, and every finished job still goes to a person for review.
What Teammates change is who starts the work. Perplexity Computer waited for a prompt. A teammate watches a Slack channel or a deadline and acts on its own, inside the permissions it was given. The real cost will show up in credits. A teammate that keeps running agents in parallel can use up a $167 monthly plan much faster than a single chat.
