"unlimited" always means within OpenAI's anti-abuse limits. Free users also get study mode with quizzes and flashcards, plugins from the app directory, skills, custom GPTs made by others and Temporary Chat. OpenAI doesn't publish image counts, so the image numbers come from what users report.

no personal plan, paid or free, can create new custom GPTs, and custom GPTs retire on December 11, 2026 (February 11, 2027 for some Enterprise workspaces).

• messages: text chats are unlimited. Think, the free reasoning mode, has its own limit that ChatGPT doesn't disclose; it shows when the limit resets.

• file uploads: 3 a day, fewer at peak hours; up to 512 MB per file.
• voice: limited minutes of GPT-Live-1 mini, without a published number.
• deep research: a limited number of runs, without a published number; the counter resets 30 days after your first use.

the desktop apps matter on the free plan: ChatGPT Work and Codex run for free users only there. OpenAI's Atlas browser closed on August 9, 2026; the desktop app and the Chrome extension replace it. reported: a $500 plan, ahead of devday on september 29

these are reports, not announcements. since September 24 the tech press has reported a new ChatGPT Pro Max plan at $500 a month, above Pro, with the fastest Work and Codex. the price already appears in OpenAI's pricing configuration and in the App Store listing for one country, as "ChatGPT Pro - Max Usage", but it isn't on the ChatGPT pricing page and its limits are unknown. OpenAI holds DevDay on September 29, 2026 in San Francisco; its agenda doesn't name new models. reporters see DevDay as a possible launch window for an always-on agent called "o", and expect a GPT-6 Cyber security model within weeks. we'll update this guide after the event.

prices aren't a straight conversion of the dollar price: in some countries Go is set well below $8, and in Europe, the UK, India and Australia tax is included. local prices on the web today:

in-app purchases on iPhone can cost a little more or less than the web: Plus is ₱999 in the App Store in the Philippines and Rs 4,900 in Pakistan. for your country, open the ChatGPT pricing page: it shows the price in your currency. Go is sold in every country where ChatGPT works; in a few, including Australia, Canada, Brazil and Japan, local prices are still rolling out, so you may see US dollars.

• Codex and ChatGPT Work share one allowance. estimated local use per 5 hours is about 5–45 messages with GPT-6 Astra, 15–150 with GPT-6 Sol or 10–100 with GPT-5.6 Sol, depending on the task; cloud tasks may use more. weekly limits may apply on top, and once a weekly limit runs out, the 5-hour reset doesn't help until the week resets. past the limit you can buy credits.
• deep research: a limited number of runs, counted over 30 days from your first use.
• voice: 3 hours of full GPT-Live-1 in a rolling 24 hours; uploads: up to 80 files per 3 hours.
