anthropic is setting aside 5% of its shares for a new public benefit fund, the company announced on oct 18. the stake can grow by another 2% for every 50% rise in anthropic's value above a set baseline. the commitment still needs stockholder approval.
the fund's rules
the fund is a wholly owned llc, not a charitable foundation. anthropic says the structure gives it more ways to give:
- large donations to traditional nonprofits
- direct payments to specific groups of people
- support for workers if ai makes their jobs less stable
none of the fund's equity can go to lobbying or political giving, in the us or abroad. the extra 2% steps are added at the board's discretion.
together with earlier pledges, about 20% of anthropic's shares are now set aside for public benefit. the co-founders pledged 80% of their own equity when they started the company. about half of employees donate equity through a company matching program.
open questions
anthropic has not said who will run the fund or how it will be governed. it has not named the baseline valuation behind the extra 2% steps. it has not given a dollar figure either. the company says it will share these details in the coming months.
earlier pledges and the ipo
the fund adds to earlier programs. anthropic has already committed $200m to research on how ai affects the labor market. it and opeanai joined a $15m simons foundation initiative that helps mathematicians check and build on ai-generated proofs. anthropic also gives the researchers access to its models and compute.
the fund arrives about a month before anthropic's ipo. reuters reports the listing is expected in november at a valuation of up to $2t. at that price, 5% of the shares would be worth about $100b, our estimate. reuters also reports that some investors are weighing a lower valuation, so the final figure could be smaller.
