should you spend $5K on a Mac Studio or an RTX 5090 for local AI?
in this short guide you'll learn:
1. more memory vs more speed – what to choose
2. why faster isn't always better
3. which option to pick based on how you build

the two $5k options in april 2026
in april, two machines sat near the $5,000 mark for running ai models at home. the table compares them on what matters for local inference.
| mac studio, m3 ultra | rtx 5090 | |
|---|---|---|
| memory | 96 gb unified, up to 512 gb | 32 gb gddr7 |
| memory bandwidth | 819 gb/s | 1,792 gb/s |
| compute, hugging face estimate | 28.4 tflops | 104.8 tflops |
| price, april 30 | $3,999 base model | $1,999 msrp, $3,699 retail card, $5,899 full pc |
| power | one small desktop | 575 w card, 1,000 w power supply |
the rtx 5090 has 2.2x the memory bandwidth and about 3.7x the compute. the mac studio has 3x the memory.
more memory vs more speed
memory decides which models you can run at all. a 70b model needs about 40 gb at 4-bit precision. it does not fit in the 32 gb of an rtx 5090. the base mac studio holds it with room to spare, and it can be configured up to 512 gb.
speed decides how fast a model answers once it fits. text generation is limited mostly by memory bandwidth. with 2.2x the bandwidth, the rtx 5090 writes tokens much faster on any model that fits in its 32 gb.
why faster isn't always better
a faster card helps only while the model fits in its memory. when a model is larger than 32 gb, part of it moves to system ram. speed then drops sharply, and the rtx 5090 loses its lead.
the mac studio trades peak speed for simplicity. it is one quiet box with no separate power supply or cooling to plan. in april it was also hard to find: the author of the video saw base m3 ultra models in apple's store about once a week.
which option to pick based on how you build
the right choice depends on the models you run, not on the hardware alone. the table maps common needs to a pick:
| if you… | pick |
|---|---|
| run 70b+ models or several models at once | mac studio |
| want the fastest answers from models up to about 30b | rtx 5090 |
| fine-tune or train models | rtx 5090, for cuda |
| want a quiet, low-power machine that works out of the box | mac studio |
| already own a desktop pc | rtx 5090 card only |
the video sums it up the same way: stick with the mac if you want easy, and pick the rtx 5090 for brute strength.
faq
can the rtx 5090 run a 70b model?
not fully in its own memory. at 4-bit, a 70b model needs about 40 gb, and the card has 32 gb. the rest spills into system ram, which is much slower.
is the mac studio faster than the rtx 5090?
no. on models that fit in 32 gb, the rtx 5090 is faster. the mac studio wins on how large a model it can hold.
how much did each option cost in april 2026?
the base mac studio with m3 ultra cost $3,999. an rtx 5090 card cost $3,699 at retail, and a full pc with one cost about $5,899.
which is better for fine-tuning?
the rtx 5090. most training tools are built for nvidia's cuda first.
update, october 16, 2026: the m5 ultra mac studio
apple's new mac studio with m5 ultra went on sale on september 22. it starts at $5,499 with 96 gb of unified memory and goes up to 512 gb. its memory bandwidth is 1.2 tb/s, up from 819 gb/s on the m3 ultra.
macstories tested all three machines on the same model, qwen3.8 27b. the numbers below come from its review:
| rtx 5090 pc | mac studio, m5 ultra 256 gb | mac studio, m3 ultra 512 gb | |
|---|---|---|---|
| writes | 59 tokens/s | 48 tokens/s | 31 tokens/s |
| reads the prompt | 3,031 tokens/s | 1,701 tokens/s | 414 tokens/s |
| first token | 2.0 s | 4.0 s | 15.4 s |
the test confirms the april verdict. against the m3 ultra, the rtx 5090 wrote almost 2x faster and read the prompt more than 7x faster.
the m5 ultra closes much of that gap. the rtx 5090 is now about 23% faster at writing on a model that fits in its memory. the mac keeps its edge in capacity.
the price gap closed too. the m5 ultra mac studio now costs $5,499, about as much as a full rtx 5090 pc did in april.
